Nigeria Sahara SOIE UNILAG School Building Shell Roof Space Frames
Elliptical Semi-Cylindrical Bolt-Ball Space Frame Project Profile
Located at University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos, Nigeria, the Sahara School of Innovation and Extrapreneurship (SOIE) features a landmark elliptical semi-cylindrical shell roof adopting professional bolt-ball joint steel tube space frame technology. As a high-end commercial and education complex building, the project integrates reinforced concrete substructure and steel space frame superstructure, creating a composite structural system of lower RC frame + upper steel space frame canopy, which becomes a iconic architectural landmark for innovation incubation, entrepreneurship training, data science, artificial intelligence, fintech and digital culture research in West Africa.
Overall Structural Geometry & Key Dimensions
The space frame covers the entire building roof and two curved side walls, presenting a perfect semi-elliptical cylindrical curved surface design.
Roof:Shell Roof Space Frame, Standing Seam Roof, Solar PV Power Generation Plant
Siding: Brise Soleil Panel, PVDF Aluminium Facade
Endwall: Roof Fascia, Aluminium Alloy Fin Facade with wire meshes;
Clear span width: 34mRise height: 18m
Longitudinal total length: 56m
Elliptical semi-axes: a=17m, b=18m
Horizontal projected area: 1,904 m²
Developed curved surface area: approximately 3,781 m²
Total steel structure weight: 130–150 tonnes
Design service life: 50 years
Structural safety grade: Class II
Seismic design standard: 7-degree seismic intensity (0.10g)
Adopting square-on-square pyramid curved space frame layout with typical top chord grid size 1.5m×3.6m and frame layer height around 1.1m, the structure adopts perimeter support mode, fixed on RC beam and column via embedded steel plates, with installation height ranging from ±0m at the lowest point to 18m at the crown.
Material Specification & International Standard Compliance
All structural design, material selection and construction strictly comply with Chinese national standards: GB 50017-2017, JGJ 7-2010, GB 50205-2020, GB/T 16939-2016.
Steel Tube Members
Main load-bearing chords and web members adopt Q355B seamless steel tubes complying with GB/T 8162-2018, specification Φ60.3×3.5mm and Φ75.5×3.75mm; secondary structural members adopt Q235B carbon steel. Premium raw material brands including Ansteel, Baosteel and Hualing are applied to guarantee structural durability and load-bearing performance.
Bolt-Ball Joint System
Standard 45# steel quenched and tempered bolt balls (HB 241–286) in three specifications for chord nodes, web concentration nodes and support nodes, matched with Grade 10.9 high-strength bolts (M16/M20/M22/M24), cone heads and end plates, fully implemented per GB/T 16939-2016. Total sets of high-strength fasteners reach 15,000–18,000 sets.
Envelope & Auxiliary System
The roof is equipped with standing seam roof panel, Mansafe safety system and solar panel power generation system; curved side walls adopt brise soleil louver panels. Endwall facade applies 500×125×2.5mm aluminium alloy rectangular hollow section with 3-layer PVDF coating (RAL 7004), achieving 20 years of service life. Cold-formed purlins in C120, C140 and □100×50 specifications are arranged at 2.4m transverse spacing and 1.5m longitudinal spacing for secondary structural support.
Anti-Corrosion & Protection System
Factory prefabricated three-coat anti-corrosion system: epoxy zinc-rich primer ≥60μm DFT, epoxy micaceous iron intermediate coat ≥80μm DFT, two-component polyurethane topcoat ≥60μm DFT. Steel shot blasting treatment and special anti-rust grease for bolt-ball interior ensure long-term corrosion resistance in tropical coastal climate of Lagos. Fire-retardant coating is exempted due to overhead installation height away from ground floors.
RC Ancillary Structure & Construction Standard
The whole construction follows GB 50755-2012 steel structure construction code, JGJ 80-2016 high-altitude safety standard and relevant hoisting and fire safety codes, implementing standardized construction organization design for large span curved space frame installation.
Project Advantages & Application Value
We provide one-stop integrated services including space frame structural design, material customization, prefabrication, on-site installation and technical consultation, delivering high-standard steel space frame solutions for overseas large-span architectural projects.
