161kV Overhead Transmission Line Project for Chirano & Wassa, Ghana

ZHM Metal Engineering Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce the successful completion of engineering, fabrication, supply, installation and commissioning for the 161kV Double‑Circuit Overhead Transmission Line (OHTL) Project serving Chirano and Wassa mining areas in Ghana. This turnkey transmission solution covers a total route length of 14km (11.7km Chirano + 2.3km Wassa) and provides stable, high‑capacity power delivery.

This project adopts double‑circuit 161kV lattice steel transmission towers designed and manufactured in full compliance with international standards including IEEE, ASCE, BS, IEC and EN. All steel members are treated with hot‑dip galvanizing for long‑term corrosion resistance in tropical and mining environments. Tower types include straight‑line suspension towers, angle strain towers and dead‑end towers, engineered to withstand wind loads, conductor tension and site geotechnical conditions.

Core Technical Components & Solutions

♦Steel Lattice Towers: Factory‑fabricated, galvanized angle‑steel structures with precise assembly tolerances. Bolted connections use high‑strength galvanized fasteners with specified torque values to ensure structural integrity and safety.

♦Foundations: Reinforced concrete foundations with stub angles, designed based on geotechnical reports. Earthing electrodes and counterpoise systems are integrated to meet grounding resistance requirements under various soil resistivity conditions.

♦Phase Conductors: Twin‑bundle ACSR 300/40 conductors per phase, delivering high current capacity and mechanical strength. Tension stringing methods are applied to prevent damage and ensure consistent sag.

♦Ground Wires & OPGW: Dual ground wire system combining JLB40A‑150 aluminum‑clad steel ground wire and OPGW‑24B1‑150 optical fiber composite ground wire for lightning shielding and grid communication.

♦Insulator Strings & Transmission Hardware: Suspension and tension insulator assemblies (100kN/120kN), suspension clamps, tension clamps, yoke plates, connecting fittings and anti‑vibration dampers. Preformed armor rods and vibration dampers are ♦installed to mitigate aeolian vibration and extend service life.

♦Earthing & Lightning Protection: Radial and ring‑shaped earthing systems using hot‑dipped galvanized steel conductors with buried depth ≥0.6m. Tower footing resistance is controlled within specified limits to ensure lightning and fault current dissipation.

♦Stringing & Installation: Tension stringing technology keeps conductors off the ground during installation. Sag is accurately controlled using equivalent span method and sighting devices. Crossings over roads and existing power lines are protected with certified scaffolding systems.

Quality & Compliance

All materials and construction processes comply with international standards including IEEE C2, ASCE 74/10, BS 4848, BS 7430, IEC 60383, IEC 60888 and EN 50341. Factory inspections, on‑site checks and commissioning tests including tower plumbness, conductor sag, grounding resistance and overall system safety are fully completed.
